An interactive outdoor activation in Shomolu, Lagos for a manifesto titled "Walk on Lawns", which I had written some months ago.
The activation is conceptualized as a form of digital guerriella art, taking inspiration from the art advocacy by street performance art in communities like Bariga and Oworonshoki. Using creative technologies like depth sensing, point cloud scans, projection, and Snapchat AR filters, the activation, is a physical manifesto on ideas of paucity and ownership of public Green spaces in Lagos. The activation also tries to contend with the ontology of publics and it's creation
Having a conversation with Philip he pointed out a dystopic and bastsardized. A reality in which, instead of the project inspiring more green spaces, it inspires the replication of projected lawns as a substitute for the natural. This "Black Mirror" episode isn't far-fetched, as we see the proliferation of synthetic grass as a substitute for the natural by people who want to experience something green. We are also beginning to see how science fiction, which has usually served as a cautionary tale, is instead steadily being co-opted by capital as a recipe for the future. So to borrow a canvas from from René Magritte's Ceci n'est pas une pipe, Ce n'est pas de l'herbe this is not grass. It's only but a signifier and must be used to replace the real thing.
Thanks to all my people that help out to make this possible from
Henrietta , Abdullah , Philip , Jedalo, Sam Udoh and OG who helped with the set up.
Jane of Aṣọ Maria who I had to disturb in the middle of two night d-day to quickly help sew the projector carrier.
Fẹ́mi Fala who provided invaluable technical and creative advice. Taribo for helping organise the street.
And thanks to everyone who turned up, it was amazing having everyone around.
