Lagos Spatial Density Mapping

Project type

Urban Study

Date

September 2020

Location

Lagos

Using Open Street Maps data with an algorithm created in Grasshopper, this was an attempt to map out "(interstitial) space" available to buildings. It maps large swaths of land in Lagos from Victoria Island to Lagos Island down to Makoko, Oko Agbo to Agani

To fully understand, imagine that the map tries to tell you the area of the compound of different buildings. Of course, we can't know the compound walls from the map, a compound could have more than one building and some buildings don't actually have "compounds" .

The solution? The mathematical concept called a Voronoi. It optimally tessellates a space based on the proximity of points to each other, the points being the center of the buildings. So, an individual cell (minus the area of it's building's footprint) corresponds to the "compound" of a building.

I have some reservations about what the map can really tell because of the not-so-complete nature of Open Street Maps data in Lagos and the algorithm might need some more refinement but then, I'm fairly confident about it.
